The Heist by RT Lucas and LJ Halkett‏

Both Scottish Authors are best friends and for years they have been developing these amazing and complex characters. Having both suffered strokes at a young age, within months of each other they decided that life was too short and now was the time for Xavier and Alicia to be unleashed onto the waiting public! That was when the world of Tainted Blood and #XAli was born!

L J Halkett is 35 years of age, Mother, Wife and Housing Officer for Local Government. She is a smart, sassy and superbly imaginative woman who devours books - especially in the paranormal genre! She is the master at multi-tasking and she is always thinking ten steps ahead. With her passion for creativity, she brings to life her imagination with vivid detail. Family is the cornerstone of LJ’s life, and her greatest achievement is her wonderful son.

Left Partially sighted after her Stroke, LJ has to write in what the Authors call ‘Nasa’ font and can only detect the colour red, which can be difficult when reading print on a daily basis - her determination is testament to her personality - as she says.... "Where's there's a will? There's a way!"

RT Lucas is 41 years of age, soon to be Divorced [Hurrah!] and had a very successful career in Recruitment and Business Development until it was cut short through illness. Having worked in the Health Sector, Human Resources and Military of Defence, she has a myriad of experiences to draw from - and says that sometimes life can be stranger than Fiction! RT is an avid reader of the paranormal/romance genres but her first love will always be Science Fiction. She says that she has far superior music taste to that of her Best Friend and Co-Author - and uses every available opportunity to tell her so! RT lives alone with her #XavCat who faithfully lies by her computer whenever she wanders into the world of Tainted Blood.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Rhonda: Well, LJ had approached me about a character that she needed for a project she was developing and asked me if I would write a male bodyguard character. I had a character that I had been working on for a couple of years who suited the spec, and Xavier was born. The inspiration for the story came from long, late night chats about storylines and eventually (two years later) we got the push to actually put our ideas down on paper. From then on, the stories pretty much wrote themselves.

LJ: Alicia Carberletti entered my mind over two and half years ago. It was Boxing Day and my husband was working. I saw her clear as day in my head. The cherry lolly in her mouth, her big brown eyes and a very intricate life. I was telling Dolly (Rhonda) about her and that I saw her needing a body guard! Xali were born. But the push we needed to put pen to paper properly was the clairvoyant I visited last October whom told me my friend and I had a dream… and it was time to put the manuscript (her words) to good use!.

Rhonda: I suppose you could say that it took both of us to have strokes within months of each other to really give us the incentive to do something about the stories we had been so carefully crafting in our heads.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
LJ: The Heist was written two times before we settled on the Manuscript that we have now, I think (correct me if I’m wrong Dolly) it took five months?

Rhonda: -laughs- It was four attempts...one being a rather coy message from me in hospital saying I had another idea and asking you not to hit me! And I think five months sounds about right...

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Rhonda: For me, my favourite thing about writing is writing with LJ. She is beyond genius and every day that we write is sheer joy. The world that we create, the characters that spring to life and the scenarios they find themselves in absolutely submerge and overtake us. I can’t think of a happier time than sitting down at the laptop, having a laugh with LJ and letting this world come to life.

LJ: Not wanting to sound corny or anything but I love watching Xavier come to life in the drive we write in. From the moment Rhonda brought him to life I fell in love! Our writing style is that the characters control us and it really is a case of you never know what is going to happen next. That right there is a epic thing to watch.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Rhonda: The fact that I have a pre-historic laptop.

LJ: My day job requires 8 hours of my attention Mon-Friday

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
LJ: Tinkerbelle! Because I want wings and fairy dust (Nickname is Pixie)

Rhonda: -shakes my head and hides my face- Seriously, LJ! I would like to be Iman Bowie...for obvious reasons -toothy grin-

LJ: -smirks as I tap my wand-

Rhonda: -blushes- Wrong wand, pixie!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
LJ: Nothing is out of date in my fridge! -Runs for my cloth and bleach spray-

Rhonda: Again, we have exceptionally well stocked and clean fridges!

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Rhonda: Much more from the Tainted Blood series - laughter; gasps; heartbreak; love and revenge! Also...no, I don’t think I want to give any spoilers!

LJ: -Makes a muhahahaha sound- Evil lurks

Award winning author Roxanne Rhoads brings you ten more tales of supernatural seduction featuring demonic desires, wanton witches, voluptuous vampires, and ghosts with grave needs…

Four brand new, never published short stories have been combined with six previously published, freshly edited tales to give you a collection of hot paranormal erotica you can really sink your fangs into.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
It’s a collection of ten stories, so each is a little different with a bit of a different source of inspiration. The characters in my head sometimes just demand that I sit down and write.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The stories were written over several years. Some are previously published (but have brand new edits and material for this publication) while others were written recently and are published for the first time in this collection.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Creating something out of nothing. Starting with a blank page and weaving words into characters and worlds.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Losing time. I can sit down and write and hours just disappear.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Hmm…never really thought about it. While I would love to sell a ton of books and be well known as an author, fame is not something I covet. I am rather shy and private and would not want all the stress and drama that comes with fame.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Oh damn, I know there’s something weird in the back of my fridge that should be tossed. Pickles or a jar of jam nobody liked and it just got stuck back there. I think one jar is over a year old. I always say I’m going to throw it out but tend to forget every time I clean the fridge. I’ll use the excuse that it’s on the top shelf and I’m short so I don’t see it. LOL

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I am currently working on Hex and the City, book two in the Vehicle City Vampires series. I hope to have it ready for release before the end of the year.

The Zombie Axiom by David Monette‏

David Monette functions as an author and illustrator from his home in Northern New York State. His highly detailed fantasy and science fiction artwork has appeared on many books, magazines, board games, and collectible cards. While receiving his MFA in illustration, his instructors reviewed his written work and strongly suggested that he combine his writing ability with his talent as an illustrator to chart his own path. Hence, “The Zombie Axiom” was born, a compelling, terrifying story sprinkled with amazing black and white illustrations from start to finish.

Pushed to their limits and holed up on a remote lake island, life has taken on a new normality. That is until winter arrives and all hell will freeze over. For it is then that the open waters of the lake, the only barrier against the unrelenting dead, will freeze. And the monsters will come. By the thousands…

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
The thing that inspired me to write this story was a general dissatisfaction I had with the typical scenario of an ill-defined contagion causing a zombie outbreak. As a very detail-oriented person, I couldn’t get around the thought that in order for a dead thing to move around it would, in fact, have to be actually dead. In a disease scenario, this presents a host of physiological problems. To start with, the brain would have to still function to supply the body with information and tell it what to do. This means the nervous system would have to still function, which means the muscles would have to still function. All of this requires energy, energy that has to be supplied to the body in the form of food. And, you guessed it, this means that the digestive system would have to be functioning to convert that food into energy the body can use. In the end, this leads to the “dead” being not really dead, but just sick people acting crazy. Not that there’s anything wrong with that- sick people acting like rabid crazies makes for a great story. It’s just that they aren’t dead. They’re sick. And they would be subject to the same sorts of things that would kill regular people, things like starvation, dehydration, a pierced heart, etc…

So, in order to have truly dead people walking around, there would have to be some sort of extremely powerful force overriding everything else and supplying them with the energy necessary for them to do what they do. Hence, the idea for “The Zombie Axiom.”

Q) How long did it take you to write?
It took over a year to write, maybe a year and a half, but that was writing only for a couple hours a day.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
That would have to be the utter enjoyment I have found getting the story from the folds of my brain and onto “paper” (or screen as the case may be) in a beautiful way.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
The least favorite? Geez, that would have to be when I spend hours trying to hammer out one paragraph. Sometimes I know what I want to say, but the words are messing around and not playing fair.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Oh man. Who would I be… probably a musician, a really popular one that was playing in front of an audience of tens of thousands of people. That would be such a weird rush.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Wait, I’ve gotta go check. Hold on. Okay, there’s some beer that I really don’t like that’s been in there for a few years. But c’mon, it’s beer. And I’ve got friends who will be thirsty enough to drink it if that’s all there is.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Well, I’ve written Book II of the “In the Time of the Dead Trilogy,” of which “The Zombie Axiom” is Book I, and I’m currently writing Book III. While I’m writing that book, I’m also researching material for the next book or series of books (I haven’t yet determined if there will be more than one or not) that are a sort of contemporary fantasy tale that takes place during the Prohibition era. Should be fun.

Thanks so much for the interview! It was fun.

Arabella Holmes was born different and raised different. After it became apparent she wouldn't fit the role of a proper 1900's lady, her father, Sherlock, called in some lingering favors, and landed her a position at the Mutter Museum. The museum was Arabella's dream; she was to become a purveyor of abnormal science. What her father called a BoneSeeker.

Henry Watson arrives at the Mutter Museum with a double assignment--to become a finder of abnormal antiquities and to watch over and keep Arabella Holmes. An easy task, if he could only get her to speak to him instead of throwing knives in his general direction.

But this is no time for child's play. The two teens are assigned to a most secret exploration, when the hand of a Nephilim is unearthed in upstate New York. Soon, Arabella and Henry are caught in a fight for their lives as scientific debate swirls around them. Are the bones from a Neanderthal ... or are they living proof of fallen angels, who supposedly mated with humans according to ancient scrolls?

Sent to recover the skeleton, they discover they are the second team to have been deployed and the entire first team is dead. And now they must trust their instincts and rely on one another in order to survive and uncover the truth.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Inspiration came from several fronts—first, I pondered at the relationship of Holmes, Watson and the rest of the world. I work with special needs, have Asperger’s in my family (and traits myself) and observed Watson to be Holmes’s conduit to people. His bridging the gap of his genius to his social skills. To me, they are symbiotic creatures.

Society accepted Holmes’s quirks because he had unique skills. I wondered if the same society would’ve been so kind to a young woman.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The first draft nine months. It underwent many revisions, naturally.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Immersing yourself in the story—watching characters evolve seemingly without your permission.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Really, nothing. Once you learn to write for the pleasure of writing—the rest is background noise.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Queen Victoria. I would love to see the time period, and experience the day to day pressure monarchs and leaders have to endure…and then happily hand it right back.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Er….I am guessing the olives. I am the only one who eats them…and they may be ready for a time capsule now.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I am working on Boneseeker 2, I have an audiobook releasing at the end of June (I heart, heart the narrator!!!!) And hopefully, a book titled Requiem Red, shall be out before fall as well.

Science as a Help and a Hinderance

It seems like I can't go a day without seeing some kind of article about what science is doing--whether it's a break through (like figuring out a possible cause of autism) or a questionable practice (like what happened at the CDC).

I find this stuff so amazingly interesting, and it's what my nonfiction zombie book, Undead Obsessed, focuses on.  It looks at how we can't live with or without (especially in the comfort we are used to) science.  It looks at how we love and fear what science can, has, and will do for us.  It examines how zombies become a metaphor for those fears.

Science has always been a double-edged sword, and when things go bad, they can really go bad.  But that's true for anything in life.  For the most part, science and scientists are an amazing addition to our culture and world, and I can't wait to see what happens next.  Of course, if it's bad, I'll find myself wondering how long it will be until the dead rise from the grave because of their mistake.

Misplaced Energy

This week was much better than last.  Most of my frustrations last week were due to lack of sleep and feeling overwhelmed.  It also became apparent to me that I was focusing my energy in the wrong place.  Once I redirected it, I felt a lot better.

I spent the vast majority of last week editing Undead Obsessed.  It needed to be done, and I think the book is getting whipped into great shape, but when I wasn't working on that, I was freaking out about whether or not an agent was going to like it.  I was impatient for them to get back to me.  I would check my email 800,000 times, then get upset when there wasn't anything new in there.  I was exhausted from worrying about things I had no control over.

This exhaustion made it hard to do other things.  It made me lose self-esteem.  I questioned my ability to write.  I actually didn't want to write--I was too tired.  I allowed myself a little break (and had a bit of a pity party), then I mentally slapped myself and told me to snap out of it.  Then, I forced myself to sit down and put pen to paper.  (Yes, I sometimes still write the old school way.)

Oh, my gosh.  I can't tell you how good it felt to get words down on paper.  I had convinced myself that I wasn't good enough and that I should just give up, but working on my chapter was cathartic.  It made me realize that I was wasting too much time looking for and worrying about agents when what I really needed to do was write.  It reminded me what I liked about the process.

My goal for next week is to focus on what makes me happy.  I'll deal with the other stuff when I have to.

The wedding is four months away, and Ethan has promised to train Sam to handle a planned honeymoon activity. He’s calculated the math to figure out her goals each week. When she reaches the weekly target she gets a massage and lots of fun orgasms. But if she doesn’t, it’s the stainless steel cane.

All this along with navigating her clients’ drama, planning a wedding, dealing with her mother while planning the wedding, and having lots and lots of wild and kinky sex.

And we haven’t even mentioned the bachelorette party.

Warning: This title contains graphic language, consensual BDSM some may find objectionable, anal sex, bondage, and the use of toys including crops, clips, clamps, plugs, and gags.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Safeword: Matte was intended to be a short story, for an anthology with a maximum of 12,000 words. It quickly grew to over 30,000 words, and was released as a short novel. I’ve wanted to return to the couple for some time, and thought I could finish their story with one more book. It turns out, it will take three more books to tell their story.

As for the inspiration, I always write strong female characters, but I wanted Sam to be even stronger than is normal for me. She needed a super-alpha male, and Ethan just kind of formed in my head.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I’ve wrangled the follow-up books for well over a year. All three will release within around five months, which will probably make people think I wrote them quickly, which is not at all the case.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I have control! Seriously, I get to decide what happens. Well, unless the characters argue with me.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Going to my day job when I desperately want to get the stuff in my head out and into the computer.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I never know how to answer this question. I’m 47 years old, and I love my own life. I’m married to my soul mate, and have two incredible children (one in elementary, one in middle school). I don’t want to be anyone else.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Oh my. I have no idea. Probably a condiment. Without looking my first guess would be the mustard, because we only use a squirt of it in egg salad, no one in the family uses it for anything else, and I’m not sure it ever goes bad.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I have a paranormal series rattling around in my head, and I’m hoping to finally start it once I put Happily Ever After to bed.

A tale unlike anything else, this second episode in the Chronicles of the Nubian Underworld series continues the erotically charged journey inside Atlanta's African-American Fetish/BDSM community.

"In order to be great, you have to leave your mark. Are you ready to leave your mark?"

After returning from Dubai, a power shift occurs within the Atlanta Fetish community as the "torch" is passed on from Amenhotep to Ramesses and Neferterri. The Palace is being transformed in Ramesses' image, and the new "power couple" is adjusting to life in the spotlight and the benefits -- and headaches -- that come with it.

But as Ramesses puts the finishing touches on establishing the balance of power, Amenhotep has tasked him with a daunting undertaking -- one that will test his will and re-forge a bond that was once broken, cementing his legacy within the sacred "society."

Exotic, decadent, and written by a true insider, Legacy takes you deeper into the Atlanta Fetish/BDSM community, twisting more surprises and revelations that are sure to take your breath away.

Amazon BN Books a Million Personal Autographed Copy

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
A) This particular series was inspired by my lack of seeing black characters who are like me, into BDSM practices and kinky encounters. I wanted to show that “we do this kinky stuff, too,” and I enjoyed bringing my characters to life and to the market. It has helped a lot of black people search out the real-time BDSM community, and they’ve empowered themselves to enjoy their kinks and fetishes, and explore the world of BDSM.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
A) The Awakening took me about six months to write, while Legacy probably took around six weeks…I got better at writing every day by the time I started writing Legacy :D.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
A) I enjoy the creative process: creating the characters, world-building, figuring out what drama I want to create and how to get my characters out of it.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
A) My least favorite thing? Well, I’m not fond of the editing part of the writing process LOL! It’s a necessary evil, but to kill babies and scenes is a heart-wrenching process that I don’t enjoy.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
A) That’s easy: Michael Jordan. To be the best player on the planet and transcend so many different areas and industries, yeah, I would love to know what that feels like, being a former basketball player myself.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
A) A week-old bottle of wine. Everything else gets demolished…I have teenagers LOL!

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
A) Ummm… how much room do I have? LOL! In the immediate future, LEGACY has already rolled out this month (June 10th) and TEMPEST will be out in December (December 9th). After that, we get ready for my erotic mystery series, Kink, P.I., with OBSESSION, DECEPTION, and RECKONING, coming in 2015 & 2016. The rest of my to-do list is liable to make a normal reader salivate, but make an author scratch their head and say, “He doing too much!” LOL! But, sufficed to say, I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 projects that are being conceived and ready to write and pitch to my current publisher and new publishers, with plenty of more material to spare.

Alexis Davenport wants to go home. She hates her new school, her mother for moving her away from her friends, and her father for walking out.

To make matters worse, Alex is haunted by images of strange girls reflected in her mirror. It’s bad enough juggling homework, a relentless bully, boys, and a deadbeat dad; now, she must save the world from an evil presence hell-bent on changing the past – and our futures. Who knew her A+ in history was going to be this important?

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I was getting ready for work one day, staring into the mirror, putting on make-up when I thought about how cool it would be if my reflection changed to someone elses face. Not scary, but cool LOL The story for Dangerous Reflections sort of took off from there.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I’d have to say about eight or nine months. I was working as a post-doctoral fellow and research took up a lot of my time. I just write when I could, kept plugging away, and heaved a huge sigh of relief when I finished the rough draft.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Losing myself in another world, delving into my characters heads, bring them to life. It’s also quite fun to watch my characters do and act in ways I never expected, often leading to some pretty awesome plot lines and twists.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
When it’s a struggle just to type a single sentence. I’ve never had writer’s block or anything (knock on wood!!) but sometimes my day job just takes a lot out of me and I can’t muster the energy to write. I try to do it every day but I also don’t beat myself up if I just feel more like zoning out with Doctor Who or Sherlock instead.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Whoever is closest to Richard Armitage *swoons* That man is quite delightful, is a year older than me, doesn’t currently have a girlfriend, and would just be so much fun to hang out with. I could listen to that baritone voice of his for hours. So if you are reading this, Mr. Armitage, I would love to be your date for any red carpet events in your future :D

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
This is probably going to shock people but I am obsessive about getting rid of old stuff in my frig. I would guess the oldest thing is maybe one of my condiments and it’s maybe only a few weeks old. I got food poisoning once and have been so careful to check dates and throw stuff away if I have the slightest concern. Leftovers HAVE to be eaten the next day or they get thrown out. My freezer is usually full though since I freeze leftovers I can’t eat the next day LOL

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
There are two more books in the Adventures of Alexis Davenport series (Twisted Reflections and Desperate Reflections) that will be launching within the next few months. I finished an urban fantasy novel called The Harvesters (detectives must stop a group from another world from murdering people on Earth) and it is in the hands of my book manager as we speak, just to see what she thinks and if she thinks it will sell (FYI she is about half way done and said she LOVES it). I’m currently writing a paranormal fantasy called Angel Fyre (Two teens hold the key to changing the turn of the battle between angels and demons). And for those that like scifi and fantasy, I have a complete trilogy (Portals of Destiny) available through Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Sandstorm Heart by Liv Olteano

Liv Olteano is a voracious reader, music lover, and coffee addict extraordinaire. And occasional geek. Okay, more than occasional.

She believes stories are the best kind of magic there is. And life would be horrible without magic. Her hobbies include losing herself in the minds and souls of characters, giving up countless nights of sleep to get to know said characters, and trying to introduce them to the world. Sometimes they appreciate her efforts. The process would probably go quicker if they’d bring her a cup of coffee now and then when stopping by. Characters—what can you do, right?

Liv has a penchant for quirky stories and is a reverent lover of diversity. She can be found loitering around the Internet at odd hours and being generally awkward and goofy at all times.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I was working in the pharmacy late one night and an older gentleman came in speaking broken English. He grabbed my hands and told me, “They are all around us! Be careful! I was meant to come in here and tell you this and you will never see me again!”

That really happened! And I never did see him again, but this became part of the opening scene of The Seer’s Lover.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
About a year.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Peace and quiet.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Peace and quiet.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I wouldn’t trade places with anyone. I’m married to my soulmate and couldn’t live one day away from him!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I JUST threw out leftovers that shouldn’t even be fed to the dog! I keep thinking someone in this household of six will eat the leftovers, but no one ever does!

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Tons of books! I love all things paranormal!

Onward and Upward

This weekend was exactly what I needed after a long week.  It really helped me decompress.  I finished edits to Undead Obsessed and sent them back to the editor for her second read through.  But more importantly, I got out of town and spent some time with my boys.

We went Jeepin', and we couldn't have asked for a more perfect day.  The weather was warm and the flowers were in bloom.  We had a picnic, went on hikes, and went down some fun Jeep trails.  I didn't even take my phone with me.  It was awesome to unplug.

Of course, even though I'm out in the wilderness, I don't completely shut off my brain.  While we were eating lunch and enjoying the silence of the hills, I commented to my spouse how perfect Vedauwoo is for escaping zombies.  There may be a few that mill around up there, but for the most part, it's wide open, has lots of hills and rocks, and would be treacherous for them to try to navigate.

When we came home from the hills, later that afternoon, we went to see How to Train Your Dragon 2.  I absolutely LOVED this movie.  It was awesome.

All in all, yesterday was a wonderful day.  And I really needed it.  I feel energized and ready to take on the world again.  Today, however, I'm going to tackle cleaning my house.

A Legitimate Author?

This week has had its fill of frustration. I always try to focus on the positive and look on the bright side, but as a human, I sometimes fail. Plus, I used to be a really grumpy and angry person, so it doesn’t take much for me to revert to my natural state.

It started on Sunday when I received a rejection. It was a very lovely and thoughtful rejection, but it was still a rejection. I allowed myself a moment of anger and frustration (and by moment I mean at least a day). Now, don’t get me wrong, the critique the agent gave me was invaluable and her heart was in the right place. What frustrated me was the process.

Some days, it feels like querying agents is some kind of masochistic act. I know that the vast majority (if not all) are going to come back as a NO. If I get a response at all. So why do I put myself through the process? Why do I bother? I already have a publisher interested in the book, so why am I dragging out that process?

I voiced these issues to an author friend of mine, who knows all too well about the trials, tribulations, frustrations, and anger that come with finding an agent. (She actually has one, but she had to go through the same heartache at one point.) I asked her why I was wasting my time. And her response was so that I could be legitimate.

Part of me knows that she’s right. An agent would make me feel like a “real” writer and that I finally made it in the publishing world. It’s what I’ve strived for with every book I’ve ever written and am still trying to attain. But as the week went on and the frustrations (not related to writing) mounted and piled up, I came back to her statement.

What does it really mean to be a legitimate author? It would be so easy if having an agent meant that, but how do you go about getting one? I’ve read the articles and advice and sent out my queries and done resubmissions and I still don’t have an agent.

I know writers who have had agents, but then the agent downsized because they were too busy and dropped the writer. I’ve known writers with agents that couldn’t sell manuscripts to publishers so the author decided to self-publish—and has been completely happy with the decision. So I asked again: does having an agent make me legitimate?

I’m still not sure I have an answer to that question. And I’ll admit, if an agent emailed tomorrow and said they wanted me as a client, I would jump all over that opportunity like zombies on a human. There’s nothing wrong with having dreams and going after them. But, at some point, I feel like I need to re-evaluate those dreams and figure out if they are truly attainable. After all, I have some wonderful publishers who are willing to take my work because of my name alone. Technically, I’ve achieved my dream of becoming a published author.

In the end, I took the agent’s rejection for what it was. I appreciated her insight and criticism, and I moved on. It’s not the end of the world. It’s not even the end of my writing career. I have to write what I want to write, and someone, somewhere will enjoy it. That made me smile. Literally, a grin broke out on my face when that realization hit me.

All I can be is who I am. And that means there will be ups and downs and bumps along the way. But the best part of that journey is that I’m doing what really makes me happy. I’m writing. If there’s something in that process that takes the fun out of writing, I need to stop that, not writing.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I was alone in a foreign country and missing my family. The winter was so cold, that both my dog and I dreaded going out. So partly as a way to fill my time and partly as a way to connect with my siblings I started writing again. What started as a hobby soon turned into an obsession. I’m still addicted to the rush I get from a nice long day tapping away in front of the computer! This particular story, was so easy to write. The characters established themselves in my mind so clearly, I just had to learn to type fast enough to keep up. The only problem I had was making Sophia likeable, even now after a lot of editing she is still a little annoying to most people.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
About three months, I wrote every spare second I had. My poor dog probably hated it, because my day was walk dog- go to day job – walk dog –eat dinner- write until bedtime. Very little play time for her.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Losing myself in the story. Once I have an idea I’ll sit and flesh it out on a plot line. Then comes the writing, I feel like a gambler getting a big payout every time I finish for the day and see I met or exceeded my target word count.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Those moments of doubt, did I tell it right? Will the story get across? Can you see the characters the way I can? Even when I have finished edits I still find myself fretting over the book, writing is very personal for me.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
That’s quite a hard question for me, because my life isn’t too bad at the moment— I’d rather be myself but with more time for writing!

But if I have to choose, it would be whoever Ryan Reynolds is currently dating! Because Ryan Reynalds…. Mmmm ;)

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Probably my Easter Eggs. I started a diet and have been doing very well, but that does mean my poor easter eggs are abandoned in the fridge. But I can’t throw them out yet, just having them there as an option has stopped me from buying anything to replace them.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
The prequel to Love and War is due out in September! It follows how Queen Elsabeth met King Frederick. It’s full of so much drama and intrigue that the final chapter alone took me an entire month to write!

I’ve also begun writing under the pen name of Suzanna Scarlett to release more erotic romances. I’m planning to release a novella soon but in the meantime I host a weekly live twitter event every Sunday 8pm EST under the hashtag #SexSceneSunday. It’s a lot of fun and fellow erotic authors Houston Havens, Anita Cox and the incorrigible Horror/Fantasy author Matt Holgate are there too!

Dark Summer Dreams by Danube Adele

Danube Adele wrote her first romance at the age of seven when she penned the story of her dogs falling in love and having puppies. She’s been dreaming up romantic tales ever since. A lifetime resident of southern California, she spends time playing at the beach, camping in Joshua Tree National Park, and hiking Mammoth Mountain.

Always a lover of adventure, she and her husband took their sons on a cross country road trip to Florida and back in an old VW Westfalia, that had no A/C, in the month of July, and still, it continues to be the best trip they ever took.

Extensive travel and trying new things has kept the creative spark alive. Danube lives in Claremont with her biggest fans, her loving husband, amazing and wonderful identical twin sons, and a teddy bear of a Rottweiler.

Her debut novel, Quicksilver Dreams, Book 1 of the Dreamwalker series, was released January 6, 2014, and Dreams of a Dark Summer, Book 2 of the Dreamwalker series, is set for release June 9, 2014. She’s currently working the next book in the Dreamwalker series, which is set to come out in December, 2014.

I freed him from imprisonment, only to become his pawn.

I, Shandria Langston, last remaining daughter of the leader of the Sunan, was charged with an impossible task. I had to rescue Kraggon Dragmor—sworn enemy of my people—from the death chamber. If I refused, our world as we know it would be destroyed.

Oh, but was he happy with my sacrifice? No. Instead of being properly appreciative of this selfless act, of being grateful that I tended to him through a deathly illness, the bastard’s kidnapped me. I’m “a symbol of retribution for his people.” The man has no heart.

I have only one advantage in captivity: I can read Kraggon’s thoughts. I know that he can’t afford to admit that I empathize with his people. He can’t afford to admit that I am more beautiful than any woman he’s ever seen, or allow me to fire his blood with every look…and he can’t afford to admit that he’ll do anything to save me, that I’ve become his heart.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Dark Summer Dreams is part of a series called the Dreamwalkers. It’s the second installment in what’s shaping up to be a five book series. There are warring nations on the planet Te`re who’ve fought each other for generations, but in Dark Summer Dreams, a woman and a man from opposite sides of the enemy line end up creating sparks, even though their peoples have sworn to destroy each other. I loved the innate tension created by that situation. Additionally, they each had a personal reason to hate the other, and somehow couldn’t. It created an emotional ride as each character battled mind and heart.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Dark Summer Dreams was the first book that I had to write, beginning to end, on a deadline. It was highly stressful because I was used to having time to be able to tinker, come and go, love and hate, and generally take my time with the writing process. This wasn’t possible once I began #2, so I was worried that I wouldn’t have the ability to truly polish it. However, I have a fantastic editor who really helped me to focus and stay on track, and by the end of the process, I was ecstatic with my final results. So, to make a long story longer, it likely took me seven to eight months to complete Dark Summer Dreams all the way to final edits.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
The most awesome feeling I experience is when I go back to reread my edits and a powerful, pivotal scene clicks into place perfectly. There have been times when I made myself cry, touched by my own character’s emotional journey, and at that moment, I know I got it right, and I can move on.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
A blank page coupled with a distracted mind can be my greatest frustration. Writing on a deadline means getting words on the page, whether you’re up for it or not, whether you feel like it or not. On days when I seem to find myself drifting off, playing with social media or surfing the web, my levels of anxiety and frustration rise. That’s when I’m less patient in general and start having doubts about my work. Writing creates an emotional rollercoaster. There are ups, there are downs, but in the end, you hop off the ride with a great big smile on your face. You’re full of pride that you got through it when it felt like the walls were starting to close in on you.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Kate Middleton seems to be a down-to-earth kind of royal. I think it would be really interesting to be her for a day, get the royal treatment, and, have access to the wonderful places she is likely allowed to be. Imagine the antiques, the art, in Buckingham Palace alone, not to mention how many other places she gets to travel.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
There is a jar of jalapenos that got shoved to the back of the bottom shelf in the fridge. I used to cook with them, create sauces with a kick when making Mexican food, but that was before I stopped doing any cooking in order to write. When a girl’s on a deadline, some things fall by the wayside, and my kids had to get used to quick food. The jar is likely a year or more old at this point.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Dreams of a Wild Heart is Book #3 in the Dreamwalkers series. It’s coming out December 15, 2014. There are two more books in the series that I’m planning to finish. Additionally, I have a great sci-fi, futuristic romance that I’m starting to plot. Sometimes, having too many books in your head can be a problem.

Book Trailer

Hi Pembroke! First, if that is your real name, I L-O-V-E it! I love unique names. I researched/found/used Braxton, Asa, Fergus and Jubal in my novel. Aren’t they great names?

Second, we have something in common. I see you worked for an agricultural publication for a while. I started my professional life as a journalist and did gigs for several ag pubs – Lancaster Farmer, Pennsylvania Farmer, and Successful Farmer, but that seems like a lifetime ago. Anyway, I know what you mean about a great training ground. It teaches you tight non-fiction writing.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Many things came together. Here are some of them:

· When I began writing, I lived smack-dab in the middle of Civil War country (Maryland-Virginia-West Virginia). I loved to hike and bike the battlefields, and it’s hard to do that without feeling something.

· A cousin of mine, Jim—one of the sanest, kindest, most level-headed people I’ve ever known—experienced a “ghost” on a battlefield. Prior to that, he’d have been the first to deny the existence of paranormal; afterward, he was quite rattled....

· During a conversation with a pastor, I came to realize that what people may believe are ghosts, may actually be demons in disguise. I found that quite intriguing.

· At a sporting competition for my son, I met a very impressive attorney and began talking with her. Turns out, she claimed her home was haunted. Here she was, this sane, articulate, well-educated attorney, telling me that she and her family lived with a ghost.

· I learned that my house was situated in a part of the Shenandoah Valley where soldiers on both sides of the Civil War were believed to have traveled repeatedly (and fought) over the course of four years. I jokingly said that I think their spirits were coming up through the vents in my house. I began to wonder: What would I do if I ever DID see a ghost? My imagination just took it from there.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Too long! About a year and a half. This was my first effort at finishing a novel. I’ve started about five of them over the years, but this time I was determined to see it through. And it got easier and easier to stick with my pledge, the further into the story I got. The characters came alive! They went everywhere with me – on walks, car commutes, to bed at night, into the shower. You should have heard them arguing for more page time in the car. When the book was done, I missed them. I was very glad I’d plan and plotted out a trilogy so that they could travel with me again.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Having written! Seriously. That feeling of accomplishment when I’m done. “Having written” is much better than actual writing. Second best thing then is writing through a block that has stifled me for weeks. When I write myself into a corner, or when my characters take me in a different direction (yes, they do that), I walk a lot (a LOT) to think it through. When I finally resolve the dilemma and sit down to write, there is not greater feeling.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Rewrites. Definitely. But, that’s where the story is actually borne. This little ditty explains my approach to writing: Story goes that someone asked Michelangelo how he created his famous statue, the Pietà. He responded: “Simple. I just chipped away everything that wasn’t the Pietà.” Well, that was easy for him. All he had to do was schlep on over the quarry, haul back a slab of marble and start chipping away. We writers don’t have the marble to begin with. We have to create it. That’s called first draft. And when you’re done with first draft you feel like you should be able to write “the end,” and drop it in the mail to the publisher. But, that’s not the case. After draft one, is when the “real” work begins – the rewrites.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Ken Burns. I love research and pulling pieces together. His documentaries are incredible. I am so impressed with what he does. If not him, then any country western songwriter. I love music and I am so impressed with the stories they tell in a three-minute timeframe, and with how the tune-word combination can completely change my mood.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Frozen sweet corn. At least 2 ½ years old. My mother picked, cut and froze it in her special way. From the time I was a little girl, I would hear people rave about my mother’s sweet corn. I’d watch her make it, even helped her, but I never could capture whatever it is she did to it. She died two years ago. This is the last pack I have left, and I just don’t have the heart to eat it because then it will be gone forever.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Crossing into the Mystic is the first in a trilogy. Book II is with the editor now, and I’m working on Book III. After that, I have a book I already started that I can’t wait to return to. It’s about miracles and how they happen around us but we’re so startled or jaded, we don’t even acknowledge them. In this particular story, one miracle occurs, but it impacts so many lives, that practically an entire town changes, yet everyone seems to shrug it off.

A deadly curse, a deadly assassin, and one shot to save everyone she loves…

Malachi Erami can’t fall in love. After she’s caught with Knave, the witch Queen’s favorite lover, she’s cursed to savagely butcher any man she falls for. Exiled to live among humans, Malachi runs a bar that serves magic-laced drinks, but since her curse labels her high risk, she’s also closely monitored. Julian Vira is her latest babysitter, but he’s also the first man since Knave that she’s been attracted to. Good-looking and nonjudgmental of her horrible curse? Yeah, he’s hard to resist.

But when Malachi finds a body behind her bar, she knows she’s in trouble. If the Witches Control Council gets wind of it, she’ll be accused of murder and sent to her death. And when her friends start getting framed for murder, she realizes she’s not the only target. Malachi and Julian dig into the evidence to clear her name, but the closer they get to answers, the closer the curse comes to taking over. So when Malachi uncovers a plot to kill the witch Queen, she finds herself suddenly recruited into service, with the promise of having her curse lifted and a reunion with Knave as well. But if she fails, Knave will die. And she and Julian might not live long enough to see that happen.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Oddly enough, the T.V. show Scrubs sparked my inspiration for this story. There was a cutaway scene where the main character J.D was fantasizing about his friend Turk being made of chocolate and took a bite out of him, then I started thinking about a character who was cursed to eat people and Black Widow Witch took shape from there.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
I had the first draft done in ten days.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love getting excited about an idea and fleshing it out into a story. I also love adding twists and turns to hopefully surprise readers.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Writer’s block!

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Wow, thought about it for a while and could not think of any famous person I’d want to be! Lame answer but I’m happy being me =)

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Probably a box of baking soda…I’m sure it’s old enough to long be useless now, ha

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
More books! I’m working on the sequel to my first novel, Affairs of the Dead, and I have other projects in mind. Who knows, there may even be a sequel to Black Widow Witch.

Working for Lucifer is the best job in the universe, until the day it’s not. Then you’re on your own, with Hell at your heels.

Ava, Sin of Greed, has had a rough week. The angel she planned to make a life with left her with nothing but a Dear Jane letter. Even worse, Lucifer believes she spilled Hell’s secrets to her ex, and her boss’s temper is notoriously apocalyptic.

For centuries, Dante kept his feelings for Ava under lock-and-key. The one time he pursued something more, he nearly lost her for good. Lesson learned. However, when he hears of her planned elopement, all bets are off. Not having Ava was a reality he could accept. Losing her to an angel is something else entirely.

Now, Ava, once Hell’s golden child, is fleeing for her life. When her old friend Dante shows up, her first instinct is to send him packing. But Dante is more than a friend—he’s the only other man who tempted her, and his fierce loyalty challenges everything she thought she knew about him. As Ava prepares to battle the devil himself, she can’t keep from getting closer to Dante…though she doubts her heart can survive another break.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
A mixture of things. My primary genre has always been paranormal, but I wanted to try something more than my truly Buffy-inspired work. I’m the granddaughter of a fundamentalist Church of Christ minister and I minored in religious studies in college. While I am nonreligious now, I decided to take some of the questions and theories I’d had throughout upbringing and during my studies and apply it to my fiction. I started with the Seven Deadly Sins, and everything grew from there.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Well, considering this is a re-release, about four years. The first 54k happened in about 6 weeks back in 2010. When the story was first conceived, it wasn’t a series book. That came when I met Ava’s sister, and the world developed even more. As I started plotting the rest of the series, I realized the 54k I wrote in 2010 needed a revamp to match what the series had become. I began the rewrite in 2013, and the 54k morphed into 90k with a lot more depth and development.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
When the characters take over and do something unexpected. It can be rather aggravating, admittedly, when they go off script, but the result is typically better than I originally conceived.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
About the craft itself? Nothing. My least favorite thing is trying to find the time to do it, when I’m not physically or mentally exhausted. Working two jobs can take it out of you.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Joss Whedon, to make all my fangirl shipperness from the Buffyverse official canon. I tried to think of something more altruistic, but that was the first thing that came to mind, so I figured I might as well be honest. Also, I think if I hijacked the body of a more powerful, influential person, I might end up making whatever I wanted to fix worse.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
We just purged the fridge! I think it was a jar of pickles, and you don’t want to know.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
More from the Sinners & Saints world, worlds like it, and forays into contemporary romance.

Thanks for having me!
