Cover Reveal: Mistaken by Heather Fleener‏

Heather Fleener lives in Indiana with her husband, D.A. and their twins, Thomas and Alexandra. Professionally she has spent her career working in the area of Intellectual Property law.

Reading has been a passion of hers since she was young and she has adored romance novels her entire life. The romantic styles of Judith McNaught and Julie Garwood are her inspiration, though she has read and loved the stories of countless other authors. Her fascination with the paranormal began to form at the young age of six, watching late-night ghost and vampire movies with her Grandpa. Unfortunately, as a result, she also remains afraid of the dark to this day.

Combining her love of epic romances and the supernatural was a natural progression for her overactive imagination. When the idea for the Ancients of Light series began, it was an abstract story line rambling around in her head to help kill a few miles on the treadmill. As the stories and plotlines continued to grow, it finally became necessary to put the words to paper and build the characters that had been living in the Realm and having conversations in her head for months.

The series is a testament to many miles on the treadmill and lots of characters that insist on having their stories told.

Betrayal by Jenna Jaxon

Jenna Jaxon is a multi-published author of historical and contemporary romance. Her historical romance, Only Scandal Will Do, the first in a series of five interconnecting novels, was released in July 2012. Her contemporary works include Hog Wild, Almost Perfect, and 7 Days of Seduction. She is a PAN member of Romance Writers of America as well as a member of Chesapeake Romance Writers. Her medieval romance, Time Enough to Love, is being published as a series of three novellas. The first book, Betrothal, released on April 19th. The second novella, Betrayal, will release at the end of January.

Jenna has been reading and writing historical romance since she was a teenager. A romantic herself, she has always loved a dark side to the genre, a twist, suspense, a surprise. She tries to incorporate all of these elements into her own stories. She lives in Virginia with her family and a small menagerie of pets. When not reading or writing, she indulges her passion for the theatre, working with local theatres as a director. She often feels she is directing her characters on their own private stage.

She has equated her writing to an addiction to chocolate because once she starts she just can’t stop.

After a night of passion with her betrothed, Sir Geoffrey Longford, Lady Alyse de Courcy is eagerly looking forward to her wedding. But when Geoffrey is forced to marry another, a heartbroken and possibly pregnant Alyse finds herself in her own private hell. She must either gamble with her reputation or marry someone she does not love.

A reputed connoisseur of women, Thomas, Lord Braeton, has dallied with many ladies of King Edward’s court, although he has favored none. However, as Geoffrey’s best friend, Thomas has sworn to serve and protect Alyse, an oath now sorely tested when he agrees to marry her—in name only—to guard her reputation. Yet, as they grow closer, and Thomas discovers Alyse’s sweet but spirited nature, he comes to desire a marriage in truth. Can he overcome her memory of Geoffrey or is Thomas doomed to burn with passion for a woman he can never possess?

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
The original germ of the idea for this book (it’s actually a serialized novel called Time Enough to Love) came from a History Channel program on the Bubonic Plague. It cited the journey, in 1348, of King Edward III’s daughter, Joanna, as being one hard hit by the plague in Bordeaux, France, as she was en route to Spain to be married. I saw the program months before I started writing but filed it away. I love the medieval period and was inspired by Kathleen Woodiwiss’s historical romance Everlasting to write my own. I remembered the History Channel program and came up with the idea to follow the courtiers in Princess Joanna’s retinue as she sailed to Spain as the focus of the novel. They are all fictional characters, although I’ve included real people from King Edward’s court as well.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The entire novel, Time Enough to Love, took me about six months to write. I started in mid-January of 2009 and I finished the first draft on July 28, 2009. It was 187K words, written single-spaced in chapters of approximately 20 pages each. It was a LONG book!

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Plotting. I am a plotter and to me that’s the most exciting thing to do in writing. Figuring out what’s going to happen and how and why is like being in a candy store for me. I love making connections, putting in twists and turns and foreshadowing everything. And I don’t always know exactly how everything is going to play out, but as I write, things become more obvious and click into place. I just can’t get enough of it!

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Promotion. It’s a necessary evil. If you want people to read your books, you have to tell them about it. That means being a presence on social media, visiting blogs, blogging, doing blog tours, sending books out for review, reviewing others’ books. In short, doing whatever you can to get your name and the name of your book in front of as many people as possible. And all that takes time every day. Time that you could be writing another book.
Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
OMG what an interesting question! I had to think about that for about five minutes. I’m going to say Stephen King. He’s my favorite non-romance author and I adore his fiction and non-fiction books. His On Writing is such an excellent book on the craft. I’d love to be Stephen for a day for two reasons: 1) I’d love to know what it feels like to be a famous author and 2) I’d hope when I reverted back to me, some of his writing skill would come back with me. J

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
The oldest thing in my refrigerator is a jar of my brother-in-law’s blue-ribbon pickles. They’ve been in there since about 1995. We’re not big on pickles, so we didn’t eat them for a while and after he died in 1998, we just kept them to remember him by. They were never opened, so they’ve never molded.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Readers can expect a lot more historical romance. I’ve got the third novella, Beleaguered, that I’m finishing up now to complete Time Enough to Love. Then I’ve got the second book in my House of Pleasure series, Only Marriage Will Do, out to my editor. I’ve also got a Victorian novel, As Long As You’re Mine, to make some revisions to before sending it to my editor. And I’m putting the finishing touches on my Regency, To Woo A Wicked Widow, the first of my series called The Widow’s Club. And these are the ones that are written. I’ve got lots of detailed outlines just waiting to be first in the queue.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I have a fascination with angels, and Pushed is a sidebar moment in time related to a larger idea I’ve developed over the years. My best friend and I discussed the possibilities over drinks one afternoon, and those possibilities inspired me to write the novella.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Creating the first draft took one long weekend. But after that, the revisions and edits took much longer. I’d say the entire novella took me a little over 200 hours.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
My favorite thing changes depending on my mood. Right now, I love my cafe table. It is my favorite thing about writing, because it adds to the atmosphere, allowing me to stand while drafting or to sit in the bar stool. I’d love to find a bar/library where I could write, and my current set up does a pretty good impression to set the mood. ;)

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
The deadlines! I’m old-school with my paper planner, and I write down everything that needs to get done every day. I used to think I was organized by nature, but I’m finding out that time management does not come naturally to me.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
What a fabulous question! Only one person and only for one day? Too tough to pin down. But for the sake of art, I’ll choose Christian Bale. If I could be Christian Bale for one day, I would have a killer understanding of characterization and motivation. I think he’s a fantastic actor, and it would be wild to be inside his head.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Hahahaa! Old as in time in the fridge (1 month old yogurt) or old as in… the 2004 Dom.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Oh wow! Looking ahead is both fun and scary! I hope to keep writing, alternating between contemporary and paranormal, and I’m sort of in love with novellas at the moment, so there will be more reading and writing of them.

Thanks so much for having me on your blog!

Alien Bride by Brie McGill‏

For more than twenty years, Orion has plotted the perfect revenge. Manipulating the hand of an insurrectionist faction, he intends to settle a shadowy score with Techthonic Innovations, a biotech giant with a history of dubious experiments. When the faction’s amateurs fail to return with the senator, they further complicate Orion’s task by returning instead with a woman who is a painful reminder of a love lost long ago. Torn between risking the secrecy of the faction and a maelstrom of emotion, Orion secretly visits her chamber in disguise.

When Orion disappears, Ninkasi is dragged into the search and rescue mission. To find him, she must learn the truth of his secrets about his hatred for the company and the physical anomalies he tries to hide. The answers await discovery in a terrifying alternate world beneath her feet in which human sacrifice is the least of her worries.

There is a reason Orion went alone...

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I binged on one too many wonderful Gothic stories, and wanted to write a Gothic of my own. I also became deeply enmeshed in the internet-era "ancient alien" mythos. That sort of gossip interests me FAR more than a People magazine!

Q) How long did it take you to write?
It spent more time fermenting in my brain, but Alien Bride took six months from start to finish (and it included way too many all-nighters).

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
In the real world, I'm an extremely domesticated person, polite, deferential. When I write, I can go wild.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Sharing my work with people I know is sometimes the toughest part, because there is a huge divide between my external persona and my innermost deepest thoughts. Then again, I believe this to be the case for almost everyone alive--and this is the value in writing visceral work. It's important for everyone to connect with their own blood and guts, because behind the day job and the makeup, it's all we are, blood, guts, and sharp teeth.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I would be any number of famous musicians (dead or alive, ha) that can play the piano superhumanly well. I play the piano, but I could spend decades trying to match the skill of the musicians that inspire me. I wonder what it would feel like to be able to play that way.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I eat everything, sometimes even the cardboard boxes when there's no more orange juice left. Nothing is safe!

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Between the Sex, Drugs, and Cyberpunk, and Sex, Drugs, and Biopunk series, there are over 12 titles planned. They will all overlap, but can be read in any order. I'm aiming for one book every six months, but quality is the ultimate consideration, so a realistic assessment might be 6-8 months per book. Most writers write with a day job!

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I wanted to write something entirely different, a paranormal romance that dealt with demons and angels, but with a twist not yet explored in the romance genre. I wanted mystery and intrigue to lace each chapter and each character having a pivotal part to play in the entire story.

In this story, I didn’t want to use the singles’ tennis match type of storytelling, where the point of view is bounced back and forth from the hero to the heroine and vice versa. I envisioned a more dynamic web where many points of views and sub plots are weaved together to tell a bigger and far complex story.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The original version took me only a month to write. But the second version, in which I added almost 30 000 more words, took another six months.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
The silence and peace I have when I delve into my worlds of fiction. There is nothing more fulfilling and calming than when I’m in my writing zone. There’s no other job out there that can compare to it.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Trying to find my writing zone. If I’m not in the right frame of mind and atmosphere, then it’s practically hopeless and extremely frustrating. So I try to stay away from any distractions to help center my muse and me, but sometimes even that doesn’t help.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Can it be an imaginary famous person? If yes, then I’d love to be Merlin. Conjuring spells and mixing potions and flying tamed dragons in Camelot. That sounds like fun, except I’ll do without his long mane of white hair and bushy beard.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I had to look, because I couldn’t honestly say otherwise. It’s a bottle of low fat mayonnaise and it expired last month.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’m almost done writing the second installment in a middle grade fantasy series Adventures of a New Witch, which I’m writing with my ten-year old daughter, under the pen name Annabelle Mallet. This writing project a whole lot of fun.

I’m also writing the second story in The Forsaken Prophecies series. Two of my favorite characters from book one, who readers think were gone forever, are making a comeback. They’re pledging an unworldly alliance in book 2. Which means trouble with a capital T.

Passion From The Vine by Shannon Casey

Shannon Casey was born in Turlock, California, the second oldest of eight children. Being the only girl she had to use her imagination to entertain herself. She was also a tom boy who never let the fact that she was a girl slow her down. She learned to ride horses better than the boys and practiced her hand at roping and barrel racing.

She married her high school sweet heart during her senior year and became a mother at seventeen, but she didn’t let that slow her down. Her daughter became her motivation to obtain her college degree and create a better life for them. Shannon graduated from CSU Stanislaus in 1997 and soon after had her second daughter. She went on to obtain two master degrees in psychology, two credentials and a private license.

During her career as a psychologist she never gave up her dream of becoming an author, but as the years passed she never found the time to actually write. Like most people, the daily grind and spending time with her children took precedence over her desire to create.

Then she met her second husband, Corey Casey, through her older brother Anthony. They married in March 2008. When her son was born in July 2009 it was the perfect time for her to cut her hours to part time. Corey inspired her to pick up her pen and write, telling her that she would never know unless she tried. Since that time, she has written her first novel, traveled and found her creative outlet.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I have wanted to write an erotic novel for the past five years, but kept coming up with excuses not too: I spend to many hours at work, I have three kids, I need to finish x, y and z first, the list goes on and on. My husband, Corey, finally says to me “Babe, we’re not getting any younger, now’s the time for you to take the chance and see if you can actually do it. I know you can.” So with his encouragement I started writing the story that had been bouncing around in my head for the past year.

When I finally put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, I already knew who my main characters were. I had a mental outline for the beginning of my book, but the body came to me as I wrote. I knew that travel, wine, food and of course romance/sex would be the key elements. As I wrote, the story took on a life of its own and I didn’t even know where it would go, until I got there.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The novel took about eight months to write, because I could only write early in the morning or on weekends. During the last three months of writing, I pretty much gave up every weekend so that I could finish the book on time (my time schedule). I am very thankful to my family for putting up with me and my “lack of availability”.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
My favorite thing about writing is the freedom of expression and creating something from nothing. I found it very invigorating to write about what I wanted and to let the story lead me on an adventure. It still amazes me how some great authors can write novel after novel and still come up with new and exciting characters and original ideas. I want to be them when I grow up!!

On a side note, my mind is constantly bouncing around ideas and I find myself daydream full scenes during inappropriate times. So I love it when I actually get to write those ideas down and see the various parts come together.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Editing, because I suffer from dyslexia and my mind does not see the differences in words (i.e. bored and board), therefore, my syntax can be horrendous, not to mention my spelling!

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
John Roberts, Chief Justice of the US Supreme Court, because I believe he has the power to make real changes in our country. A Supreme Court judge service a life tenure and cannot be voted out by congress or the people, therefore, he/she is difficult to buy off. I’m not sure what I could accomplish in one day, but I would do my best to share my ideas with the other justices and attempt to pass a meaningful law!

If I chose a celebrity, it would be Julia Roberts because I think she’s gorgeous and intelligent.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Let me go check; a bottle of Soy Sauce with an expiration date of May 2012. I’m usually anal about cleaning out the fridge and do it every time I go grocery shopping, but I guess I missed that one. Now, my granny on the other hand is still hording food that I swear expired in the 1980’s!!

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’m very excited about my new writing project and the sleepless nights are back. What started as a thought has now bloomed into a new novel. I have begun researching Avatar’s and brain functioning for my new futurist novel. It will be an erotic fantasy about the future and focus on the use of Avatars in our lives. That is all I’m willing to disclose at this time!

Publishing Milestones

There are many milestones in an author's life that make us do a little happy dance.  The first is getting the story finished.  Then, it's editing it to the point where we feel we can send it out to agents/publishers/whoever.  Next is getting the story accepted.  After that, it's getting the cover.  And finally, it's getting the physical copies of the books in the mail.

This last one is better than Christmas.  There is nothing more magical than seeing the fruits of your labor before your eyes.  It's amazing to be able to hold your baby and cradle it against your chest.  It's a very exciting time.

I had an awesome week this week because of the release of The Appeal of Evil.  There were fantastic blog posts and promotion for the book, which will continue into February.  Help me celebrate this milestone by happy dancing with me.  And if you get the chance, purchase a copy of the book.

Quintin Pearson, an American living in London, has spent the last two years working as a magazine staff writer and nursing a broken heart. Craving a change in his quiet life, Quintin accepts an invitation to an exclusive party hosted by Regina Bremington, the U.S. ambassador’s glamorous wife. At the party, terror takes over when the electricity suddenly goes out and the ambassador is assassinated.

In the safety of a dark bedroom, Quintin meets a mysterious stranger named Luca, an Italian spy. Even though the two men can’t see each other, a spark is ignited that soon becomes a mutual lust. Within days, Luca arranges for them to meet again at a remote seaside town in Belgium. There, Luca confesses his true identity and convinces Quintin they must team up to bring the ambassador’s killer to justice.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Love in the Shadows was inspired by a dream I had, but there’s a song with the same title recorded by E.G. Daily and also by a band from Belfast called Circuit 21 that I listened to while writing the book.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Love in the Shadows required a tremendous amount of research. Overall, the novel took close to three years to write. The first chapter of the novel was work shopped at the Saints and Sinners Literary Festival in New Orleans under the guidance of Jameson Currier.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I really love the research process of a novel. So often I discover something new and usually it inspires more creativity.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Writing is a wonderful part of my life, but it does take a considerable commitment of time and energy. Aside from the actual writing, there’s much more work required of authors including the editing process and marketing. However, I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Writing is my passion.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Tennessee Williams. I think he was a genius. I’d love to know what his creative process was like.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
There’s a bottle of salad dressing in there that I’m pretty sure is now a science experiment.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Love in the Shadows is the first book in a planned trilogy.

The second book, The Beautiful Lie, is being written now. In it, Quintin finds himself drawn into the life of Colette Marchand, the unfaithful wife of a French diplomat who's convinced her Spanish lover is an assassin who's been hired to kill her.

The third book in the series will be titled The Edge of Desire.

I’m currently writing a new novel, a gay romance called Backstrokes, about a classical pianist and a lifeguard falling in love. Backstrokes will be available in June from my publisher Bold Strokes Books.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I’m not embarrassed to admit that I’m a celebrity-gossip addict. And of course, it’s not a stretch for a writer of romance to follow celeb news closely, because so many of the tropes of the gossip blogs are identical to those in romances.

“In Love with the Nanny” has been a well-worn trope in romances since at least the mid-nineteenth century, when Jane Eyre set the bar very high, indeed. A century later, The Sound of Music was another great one, and I’m a big fan of Robin Williams’ hilarious gender flip in Mrs. Doubtfire, too.

Now, I’m not saying this is the only quality shared by these three classics, but notice that in all three cases, the father in question wasn’t committing adultery. Rochester is a bachelor, Captain Von Trap is a widower, and Mrs. Doubtfire is…well, you’ve seen it.

I was interested in writing an in-love-with-the-nanny story that didn’t involve any moral transgression on either his or her side, a sweet romance that would also offer a peek into what it might be like to fall in love with someone whose every move is scrutinized by the media. I feel sorry for celebrities sometimes in the age of Facebook and Twitter, when everyone comes out of the woodwork to offer their unsolicited opinions. How would that affect a real-life relationship between two good people? That was my driving question while writing the book.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
That’s a tough question to answer, because I didn’t work continuously on the book for an entire year, but I first thought of the idea in February 2013 after a fun chat with my editor, Stacy Abrams. I wrote most of it between June and August, 2013, with one more big push in November to get the manuscript in publishable shape. All told, probably about four months of intensive writing. I wish I could write faster! Or better! One or the other, though probably not both.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Thinking I know where a story is going, and being wrong. Having a character (or an editor!) suggest a better direction than I would have thought of on my own.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
How one small change can create an avalanche of revisions. How hard it is to keep track of all the little details.

Elmore Leonard, the great crime writer who died in 2013, supposedly read his entire manuscript, every day he sat down to write, from page one. I’d like to try to do that next time. Now that is commitment!

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I’m glad you said “for one day,” because that’s pushing the time limit for me when it comes to out-of-body experiences.

This is going to sound a little Mrs. Doubtfire-y, but I’m going to go with Bruce Springsteen, sometime during the Born to Run Tour in 1976. I can’t imagination the elation I’d feel as a visionary musician or writer at the very moment of hitting my stride, becoming part of something larger than myself. What a feeling it must be, to witness your own talent culminating so powerfully.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Something called “ice wine.” It’s wine, obviously, in a slender bottle. A friend of my husband gave it to us. But what is it? Dessert wine? I can’t tell, and I don’t like the marketing, so it’s been sitting in the back of the fridge for going on two years.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’m working on a young-adult novel now. I don’t want to share too many details about it, but the main character was born blind, and there are two love interests: the alluring new girl at school, and the girl who is right under his nose, all along.

When desire rises, angels will fall. One, by one, by one…

Over the past century, Belphagor has made a name for himself in Heaven’s Demon District as a cardsharp, thief, and charming rogue.

Though the airspirit is content with his own company, he enjoys applying the sweet sting of discipline to a willing backside. Angel, demon, even the occasional human. He’s not particular. Until a hotheaded young firespirit steals his purse—and his heart. Now he’s not sure who owns whom.

A former rent boy and cutpurse from the streets of Raqia, Vasily has never felt safer than in the arms—and at the feet—of the Prince of Tricks. He’s just not sure if Belphagor returns those feelings. There’s only one way to find out, but using a handsome, angelic duke to stir Belphagor’s jealousy backfires on them both.

When the duke frames Vasily for an attempted assassination as part of a revolutionary conspiracy, Belphagor will do whatever it takes to clear his boy’s name and expose the real traitor. Because for the first time in his life, the Prince of Tricks has something to lose.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
The Demons of Elysium series is a related-world prequel to my trilogy, The House of Arkhangel’sk. I wanted to write about the two demon characters in that series and see how they got together, and to indulge in some much sexier scenes than I’d been able to do in the fantasy trilogy.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Prince of Tricks was my NaNoWriMo book for 2012. I wrote the first 50,000 words in a month and took another month and a half to finish up. This is about twice as fast as I normally write, but I think forcing myself through NaNo helped me to write without inhibition, which worked for this book.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love being able to make my characters happy after putting them through hell. Real life is often all about the hell part without ever getting the happy ending. Writing lets me change that, even if it’s only for imaginary people.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
There are certain points during the writing process when I have no idea what’s supposed to happen next. I don’t do much plotting, as I’ve found it only seems to make these moments more frequent, oddly enough. But when I hit one, it feels like plodding through mud for days, while my characters stubbornly refuse to tell me what’s going on until I finally have an “aha” moment.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I guess I’d go with Queen Elizabeth II. Who wouldn’t want to be the queen for a day?

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
A jar of wheat germ. It expired a year ago. I’m ashamed to say, I used it for my stuffing recipe on New Year’s Day. I’m throwing it out right now. ;)

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
There are two more books coming out this year in this series, King of Thieves, and Master of the Game, and I have some exciting news for 2015 that I can’t share yet. J

Thirty-six-year-old Irene Dunphy didn't plan on dying any time soon, but that’s exactly what happens when she makes the mistake of getting behind the wheel after a night bar-hopping with friends. She finds herself stranded on earth as a ghost, where the food has no taste, the alcohol doesn’t get you drunk, and the sex...well, let’s just say “don’t bother.” To make matters worse, the only person who can see her—courtesy of a book he found in his school library—is a fourteen-year-old boy genius obsessed with the afterlife.

Unfortunately, what waits in the Great Beyond isn’t much better. Stuck between the boring life of a ghost in this world and the terrifying prospect of three-headed hell hounds, final judgment, and eternal torment in the next, Irene sets out to find a third option—preferably one that involves not being dead anymore. Can she wipe the slate clean and get a second chance before it’s too late?

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
What’s unique about Hereafter, and where the idea came from, is that I started from a place of, “What if all the stories of the afterlife were true?” I love mythology and when you trace stories back, you can sort of see how they all converge and spring from a single point of origin. So I thought about afterlife mythology and customs—all these myths and stories are so different; how could they possibly be connected? If I traced them all back to that single point of origin, what would that make the afterlife look like? And so, that’s what I’ve done with this series—combined all the myths and legends into a single, cohesive, and hopefully believable explanation of what awaits us after death. :-)

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Hereafter has had a strange and long journey. It took me two years to write, and took eight months of querying (and over a hundred rejections) before it finally got picked up by a publisher. It was released August 1, 2012 and was out in the world for a year. Then a dispute with the publisher led to them returning the rights of the book to me last September. Hereafter has been out of print since then. It’s finally, just now, returning to the market, soon to be followed by its sequel, Thereafter, on May 1st.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
When someone tells me they liked my book! That’s my most favorite part. But also, meeting new and interesting people; holding giveaways; and participating in blog hops and blogging memes. That stuff is super fun!

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Writing! LOL! Dorothy Parker famously said, “I hate writing; I love having written,” and that’s me to a T. I also have found that I don’t really like managing the production process (interior layout, editing, etc.). I miss having a publisher do those things for me. Keeping on top of the administrative stuff—chasing down copyright infringement, making sure the book is loaded properly to all the retail sites, social reader sites, etc.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I’m not sure I’d ever want to be famous—I’m an introvert and I’m shy. The idea of having people snapping pictures of me, everywhere I go, terrifies the bejeebers out of me! I’d have to find some celebrity that has their own private island (I hear Johnny Depp and the Jolie-Pitts both have one) and then maybe I’d be them, just so I could spend the day, alone, on my own private island.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Ahahahaha! My answer to this question is not going to be very exciting because I’m actually kind of militant about keeping my fridge clean and neat. Every week, when I do the grocery shopping, I throw out old food, clean the inside with a kitchen antibacterial cleaner, and then restock it with the new food. So the oldest thing in there is probably only condiments, all of which are not expired.

I should add that I’m only this obsessed with a clean fridge because my fridge is only a year old and I love it very, very much. I went from having a fifteen year old basic fridge that only sorta worked (and in which food spoiled very quickly) to a shiny, black, freezer on bottom unit with adjustable shelves, crisper drawers with adjustable controls, and a built in ice maker. Mmmm….ice maker... I really love my current fridge and it’s still in that honey moon phase, so I baby it and take good care of it. :-)

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
The second book in the series comes out May 1, 2014. The third book is almost written, and I hope it will come out in the fall (and then it’s on to book #4!). Meanwhile, I’m working on a science fantasy—a kind of “Firefly meets Battlestar Galatica” in which cowboys in space struggle to survive a cataclysmic event that destroys their society, leaving them lost and alone in space.

Voodoo on Bayou Lafonte by Susan C. Muller‏

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a fourth generation Texan and I attended Stephen F. Austin State University where I majored in Business Administration, but took creative writing classes on the side because that’s where my heart was.

I have always loved reading and if it’s true that God doesn’t subtract the hours you spend reading from your life span, then I should pass the century mark with flying colors. I first tried my hand at writing when I was eleven, but the sun was shining and I had a new bike so that effort was doomed to failure.

I didn’t try writing again until I was well into my sixties. People ask me why I took it up then and my answer is simple, because my husband retired. If you don’t understand, just wait, you will.

My first novel, The Secrets on Forest Bend, won several awards. After that, I was hooked.

I’ve been blessed with two great kids and four grandkids. My late husband and I loved to travel and we saw much of the world. Kenya, New Zealand, and the Galapagos Islands are a few of my favorite places. After he passed, I thought my traveling days were over, yet I’ve since been to Argentina, Brazil, and Venezuela.

I live in Spring, Texas where I currently serve as president of the Northwest Houston chapter of RWA and volunteer at a local hospital. I also enjoy speaking to book clubs and writers groups.

A frantic phone call leads Detective Remy Steinberg racing through the night toward the one place he vowed never to return. With the life of his kidnapped daughter at stake, he willingly faces shotgun-wielding drug dealers, corrupt law-enforcement officials, and a raging hurricane.

Scouring the seedy back alleys of New Orleans for information, he goes undercover at a sinister voodoo ceremony, and struggles to understand the forces of black magic that hold his daughter hostage.

With time ticking down, he battles for his life against a high voodoo priest, but can he face the two things he fears most: the swamp that terrorized his childhood, and the ex-wife he’s never stopped loving?

Detective Remy Steinberg must return to Louisiana in search of his kidnapped daughter. Can he save her before the swamp swallows her up and he loses any chance at happiness?

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Voodoo on Bayou Lafonte is the third book in my Occult series. I had written Detective Adam Campbell’s story in The Secrets on Forest Bend, and his partner, Ruben Marquez’ story in The Witch on Twisted Oak. For my third book in the series, I picked a member of their squad to feature. Remy Steinberg had already been described as half Jewish, half Cajun, born in New Jersey and raised in Louisiana, with two ex-wives and a child. I started with a simple premise; what kind of trouble could Remy get into in Louisiana? To fit into the series, the story needed a paranormal element and what better than voodoo?

Q) How long did it take you to write?
The book itself took me about five months to write, but that doesn’t include the time spent editing and revising. After which comes picking a cover and promoting, much more difficult that the actual writing.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Coming up with new ideas and new ways to phrase them. Trying to make all the pieces of the plot come together is like working a 5,000 piece jigsaw puzzle.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Much the same as my favorite part, coming up with new ideas and new ways to phrase them while trying to make all the pieces of the plot come together. But the absolute worst part is promoting. I know, if I don’t try to promote my book, no one will even realize it’s there to like or not like. But I truly hate beating my own drum.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I have no desire to be famous. In fact, I can’t think of anything that would make me more uncomfortable. All I want to do is write books and if people I don’t know will read and enjoy them, I will consider myself a success.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Whenever my daughter visits, she goes through my pantry and fridge, throwing out things that have expired. The first time she did this, she found cans of food that were three and four years past their expiration date. Now the oldest thing is the salad dressing in my fridge. But they don’t really mean anything by those dates, do they?

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Voodoo on Bayou Lafonte is the third book in my Occult series and is the last book scheduled for this series. Or is it? Each of the first three books has featured a character named Tenequa, who can flip from Tenequa the Terrible to Tenequa the Kid Whisperer in two seconds flat. She’s also Tenequa the part-time reverend. I think maybe she deserves her own book. I picture her finding a beautiful bottle that contains a djinn or genie. What do you think?

Lisa is driven to succeed in all areas of her life, but she too has a secret. A secret she must choose to be embarrassed by or to honorably embrace.

Is it possible these polar opposites will find passion and trust in each other’s arms, enabling them to relinquish control and share their secrets, or is their attraction far too turbulent to pursue?

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
Initially I wrote this book as a message for women. I want women to know it is okay, actually honorable, to wait for real love rather than lust. Yes, sex is enjoyable, but making love is out of this world. The story evolved into a suspenseful, humorous, love story; a story that is fun to read, a story that causes you to laugh and cry out loud.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Turbulent Passion evolved four times over two and a half years. The final take actually came to me in a dream, which is why Lance’s story unfolds from his dreams.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I love the freedom to feel and say whatever I want. The ability to create my dream men and relationships is fun and invigorating. The opportunity to touch lives with interwoven messages and lessons is humbling. Hopefully, my stories show men what some, not all, women really want in a relationship, but are afraid to say or ask. On the flip side, I hope women discover it is okay to take charge in and out of the bedroom. Writing is empowering. Ladies, it is okay to be a “good girl” in the outside world, and a “bad girl” behind closed doors. Men actually like it that way!

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Deadlines! Even though I am an indie author I feel I need to meet a scheduled date for my readers. If I tell them a date for a sequel I feel obligated to meet it. I need to learn to keep my mouth shut until the book is finished!

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
If the person doesn’t have to still be living I would say Marilyn Monroe. It would be so fun to be the sexiest woman ever for one day! If the person needs to be alive I would either want to be Oprah or Barbra Streisand. As Oprah I would share my wealth with many foundations and agencies, be very philanthropic. If I were “Babs” I would hold a huge concert and sing my heart out!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
It would have to be the box of baking soda I put in there to absorb odors. I forget about it and it gets pushed to the back. I think this box may be nine months old. I will add a new box to my grocery list now! Thanks for the reminder.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
Book two of the Flyboy Trilogy, Burning Desire is tentatively set to release in March. After I complete book two and three of the trilogy, I have two romance books in mind and a teen trilogy I plan to write. I am excited to write for my readers. The messages my readers send me motivate me to be more creative and entertaining. I love the way they describe Captain Lance Miller. One reader said, “I think Lance would do himself if he could. He loves himself and it is hilarious.” I adore the fact they find Lance sexy and entertaining…Mission accomplished!

What she experiences makes her more determined than ever to find out what really happens after death and what became of her lost love. Her journey takes her to places she never thought possible. But just around the corner, danger still lurks. Will she find the answers she seeks and ultimately discover the truth?

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I was inspired to write Echoes of Paradise after having some of my own paranormal experiences. When I was in college, I had an intense experience of overwhelming emotion while driving. It came out of the blue, and I had no idea why I was suddenly crying. I later found out that my aunt had passed away at the exact time of my outburst.

I also had a precognitive dream about my niece. My sister wasn’t even pregnant at the time, but somehow I got the baby’s name and physical description right.

Then several years later, I began noticing a series of bizarre coincidences after a friend died. At first, I dismissed them, but they continued for a very long time, and I started wondering if he was trying to communicate with me from beyond the grave. At that point, I asked him for a sign – a pink rose – to prove or disprove what was happening. About a week later, I found a pink fabric rose in the park under the picnic table bench I was about to sit on! I was stunned, shocked and definitely inspired. That amazing experience started me on an incredible journey that led to the creation of Echoes of Paradise.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
It took me about six months to write the book.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
What I love most about writing is the opportunity to inspire others and touch their lives in some way. I also enjoy using my imagination and creativity to craft the perfect story.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
My least favorite thing about writing is when I get a sore neck from sitting at the computer too long. Too bad the writing process isn’t faster! Maybe I just need to learn when to take a break. Sometimes when you get deeply involved in your story, it’s hard to stop.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
I’ve never had any desire to be famous. I’m an introvert, so being in the public eye makes me somewhat uncomfortable. I much prefer a small, private gathering with a few friends. However, if I had to pick someone, I would choose Oprah Winfrey. She’s confident, inspiring and comfortable being herself. I also love that she is such a positive role model for others. I could learn a thing or two from walking in her shoes for the day!

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I’m always checking expiration dates and discarding old food promptly, so you won’t find much that’s old in my fridge. However, I do have a bottle of cherry wine I received as a gift about 8 years ago. My husband and I don’t like cherries, so neither one of us has been compelled to try it.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’m finishing up a children’s book called A Rare Gem, which I’m hoping to release by the end of this year. I would also love to write another paranormal romance book. Who knows, maybe I’ll even do a sequel to Echoes of Paradise. Stay tuned!

When Jasmine Graves is invited to the set of the movie based on her book series, she thinks all her dreams have come true. The Vince Demarco, the man she's based her hero on for the past seven years, will be there and she can't wait to meet him. Little does she know that she'll have to face her worst fears to keep her leading man.

Vince Demarco has never been as intrigued by a character or an author before being introduced to the haunted werewolf he's been cast to play. So when he comes face to face with its creator, Jasmine Graves, he's awestruck. But he fears an author who's a reported recluse will want nothing to do with the paparazzi madness and crazy shooting schedule that comes with dating a movie star.

Neither one can deny the almost animal attraction that overwhelms them at first contact. But can an author and her muse breakthrough the barriers between them, or will the heat between them turn to ice in the winter cold of the Adirondack Camp?

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
It was actually a call from Emma Lai for an anthology of books featuring a character who was an actor or actress. I’d never written a book about an author before, though I’d been thinking about doing one, and I used a kind of weird dream-sequence of mine from way back when that was about this actor, and I thought… oh, this is perfect. So I wrote it out. It was a lot of fun. I ended up writing a story that was too long for the anthology, but that Twenty Or Less Press liked enough to publish on its own.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
This one was pretty quick. I wrote the draft in about 2 ½ weeks or so. But then of course there were several rounds of revisions to do after that draft was finished.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
I like the quiet, actually. It’s not really a specific part of the craft of writing so much as the dedicated time to be creative and focus on a story and my characters and stuff. Though through the writing process, I think it would be the pre-planning stages – figuring out who my characters are, where they come from, what makes them tick, how they talk, what tattoos they have, what their astrological signs are… that kind of thing is fun, and I really like it.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
Probably copy edits. By the time a book is to that stage I’ve already done all the prep work, created the characters, the scene, the plot, I’ve written the draft, I’ve revised it at least once (but usually twice or three times) before it even sees my editor, then edited it with my editor through two rounds, and so by the time I get it back, I don’t even want to look at it any more. I do, of course, because that’s the job. But that’s definitely the least favorite.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
The president. Because… that would be awesome. I suppose I should have picked someone rich and gorgeous, or married to someone rich and gorgeous, but I think it would be epic to have that kind of power and responsibility for a day, just to see what it was like.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
I have absolutely no idea. This question implies that I attempt to look beyond the few things in the front of the fridge I actually want and reach into the icky recesses of the back of the fridge to find something unrecognizable. I think I threw out a thing of cream cheese last week that expired in 2012. Like early 2012. But since that’s gone, I have no clue what else could be lurking in there.

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I’m currently writing another book about a character who’s an author. It was the first author character I’d come up with, before writing this one about Jasmine Graves. The WIP (work in progress) is currently titled Domestic Discipline Needed and is about Elizabeth Clark, an author plagued by this idea to write a BDSM book that just won’t leave her, even though she knows she could never like that kind of thing… until she meets local Dom and owner of the K Club, Chase Masters. That will be next up on the publication side I think. After that I will be working on book three in my Marietta Hotels series, but I’m not quite sure yet which book will be the third. The titles/ideas I have in my head so far are: A Murder in Times Square and A Night in Niagara. Not sure which one will take top billing just yet.

Thanks so much for having me by. It was fun (and maybe a little embarrassing with the whole cream cheese thing.)
