Tail of the Devil by Danielle DeVor

Danielle DeVor spent her early years fantasizing about vampires and watching “Salem’s Lot” way too many times. After living briefly in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, she moved back to her hometown to write. When not writing and reading about weird things, you will find her hanging out at the nearest coffee shop, enjoying a mocha frappuccino.

If Mathias thought being homeless sucked, being a vampire is worse. The vampires who transformed him believe he is the reincarnation of an ancient king. They expect him to quit swearing, use a napkin, and play by their weird, ancient rules. Screw that.

But after the reigning queen assaults Mathias, he has visions of a past life in which he was that king. Turns out the current queen killed him then, and wants to kill him again. He’d better grow up fast, because if he doesn’t his second life may be shorter than his first.

Q) What inspired you to write this story?
I have always been into vampires, so I guess I was preparing to write this story for years. The idea that a street kid who would be saved by a vampire was interesting to me for a couple of reasons. One: Street kids are loners. If a vampire was looking for a perfect meal, the homeless are sadly, a very good choice. They are mostly unknown to other people except those like themselves. That makes them a perfect victim for a vampire. And two: I love characters that are both good and bad. The idea that a vampire, a so-called evil creature, would save someone from death, is kind of sweet in a way.

Q) How long did it take you to write?
Tail of the Devil went through so many drafts before it was ready to submit. I also, freely admit that I took quite a few long breaks in between drafts. All in all, it was six years before this book was finished.

Q) What is your favorite thing about writing?
Creating words that make people smile.

Q) What is your least favorite thing about writing?
I am a person that does all of their writing long hand, so for me, the dreaded part is typing it all up. That takes forever.

Q) If you could be any famous person for one day, who would you be and why?
Right now? I’d be Robert Downey Jr. He’s riding a high from Iron Man 3 and in negotiations for The Avengers 2. I would love to see how the negotiation process works.

Q) What is the oldest thing in your fridge and how old is it?
Cherry jelly. It is about a year old, but it was just opened last month. J

Q) What can readers expect from you in the future?
I have the first in a new series coming out in October called Sorrow’s Point. It is about a defrocked priest who ends up doing an exorcism on a six-year-old girl.

I am also just sitting down to write the sequel to Tail of the Devil. I’m hoping to get it out sometime in 2014 or early 2015.
